Planning guide 02

Think about your site first

Bring facts about your property to the people who will build the home.

Start with the parcel

Record access, slope, views, sun, utilities and any known restrictions. A local builder or design professional can assess how a home design fits your actual property.

Questions to carry forward
  • Where could the building sit?
  • How would vehicles reach the shop or garage?

Decide which way the home faces

Sun, wind, views and the road all pull on the same house. Decide where you want the porch, the great-room windows and the shop doors to face before you settle on a design, and share that with your builder.

Questions to carry forward
  • Which side should catch the morning or the evening sun?

Check public flood information

The FEMA Map Service Center is a starting place for U.S. flood hazard information. Share relevant findings with your local project team rather than treating a map lookup as a complete site assessment.
