Living in The Dogtrot

Who it suits

The Dogtrot suits people who want something different from the usual ranch. Two 24 x 40 ft wings stand under one continuous roof with a 16 ft open breezeway between them. The great room and kitchen are in one wing and the bedrooms in the other.

Room by room

  • Front door: the 3 ft door on the front wall enters the great room, 23 x 32 ft, with a pantry and the laundry and mudroom off it.
  • Breezeway: on the right wall of the great room, a 6 ft glass door opens into the breezeway.
  • Sleeping wing: a 3 ft door from the breezeway enters a hall that serves the primary suite, Bedroom 2, Bath 2 and Bedroom 3.
  • Primary suite: it also has its own 3 ft door onto the right-hand porch, plus a bath and a closet.

Build notes

  • One continuous 7:12 roof covers wing, breezeway and wing: eave at 11 ft, ridge at 22 ft 8 in, running left to right.
  • The breezeway is 16 x 40 ft and open to the air, so the walk between the great room and the bedrooms is covered but outdoors.
  • Each wing has a front porch 24 ft long and 8 ft deep, with 4 posts and a 3:12 shed roof attached at 11 ft.
  • The members carrying the roof over the open breezeway are for your engineer to size.

The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

Foundation
Typical starting point: monolithic slab-on-grade with a thickened edge (a stem wall where frost depth requires), footings below the local frost line, a footing under every interior bearing line and girder point, and porch-post footings with uplift ties. Slab thickness, footing sizes, reinforcing and anchorage are sized by your engineer for your soil, frost depth and loads.

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
