Living in The Ozark Gable

Who it suits

The Ozark Gable suits a first home or a downsize, and anyone who likes a plain, compact plan. It is one rectangle under one gable roof, with no wings or jogs. Each bedroom opens off the great room, so there is no hall.

Room by room

  • Front door: the 3 ft entry leads into the great room, one open room for kitchen, dining and living, with the wood stove flue rising from it.
  • Primary suite: opens off the great room, with a bath and a walk-in closet; windows face the front and the left end.
  • Bedrooms: Bedroom 2, Bath 2 and Bedroom 3 all open off the great room.
  • Laundry: a laundry room, 5 ft 6 in by 7 ft 6 in, opens off the great room too.
  • Back door: a 6 ft glass door leads toward the rear deck, 16 x 8 ft and open to the sky.

Build notes

  • A single 7:12 gable roof covers the house, with its eave at 10 ft 6 in and its ridge at 19 ft 10 in, parallel to the front wall.
  • The 48 ft front porch is 8 ft deep. Its 3:12 shed roof stands on 6 posts, and the rear deck has no roof.
  • The stove flue is 8 in wide and leaves the front roof slope 5 ft from the ridge.
  • The plan is drawn for wood framing. A steel or post-frame version is for your builder or engineer to adapt.

The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
