Living in The Courtyard Works

Who it suits

The Courtyard Works suits windy open land and people who want private outdoor space. The house, a bedroom wing and the shop form a U around an 18 ft courtyard.

Room by room

  • Great room: 35 ft 6 in by 27 ft, with 2 double doors on the front, each 6 ft wide, that open toward the courtyard. The mudroom, a powder room and a walk-in pantry open off it.
  • Shop: through the mudroom, with a 3 ft door and a 6 ft glass door on its left wall facing the courtyard, plus a 12 x 12 ft overhead door on the front.
  • Bedrooms: from the gallery off the great room you reach the laundry, Bath 2, Bedroom 2 and Bedroom 3.
  • Primary wing: the gallery continues through a link hall to the wing hall, which serves the primary suite and an office with its own 3 ft door.

Build notes

  • The main house is 6:12, with eaves at 10 ft and a ridge at 17 ft. The bedroom wing ridge is 16 ft and the shop wing ridge 21 ft 6 in, both running front to back.
  • The shop walls are 14 ft to the eave, against 10 ft for the house. Your building department decides how the wall and door between mudroom and shop must be built.
  • The front porch is 18 x 6 ft on 3 posts, and the porch on the bedroom wing is 22 x 6 ft on 4.
  • The U runs 72 ft wide and 68 ft deep overall, so test it against your setbacks early.

The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

Structure
Drawn for conventional wood (stick) framing; trusses, posts, beams and footings are sized by the builder's engineer. A steel-frame or post-frame version is an adaptation your builder or engineer makes. Member sizes, connections and loads are by your builder's engineer for your site.
Foundation
Typical starting point: monolithic slab-on-grade with a thickened edge (a stem wall where frost depth requires), footings below the local frost line, a footing under every interior bearing line and girder point, and porch-post footings with uplift ties. Slab thickness, footing sizes, reinforcing and anchorage are sized by your engineer for your soil, frost depth and loads; shop and garage slabs are usually heavier than living-area slabs.
Counts
12 windows, 7 exterior doors, 1 overhead door, 7 porch posts

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
