About The Tallgrass
Wheat-tan board-and-batten and cedar posts give The Tallgrass the easy warmth of a prairie farmhouse. Its covered porch runs across the front and down the whole left side, while a lower garage wing sits back at the right. Inside, the front door opens to a vaulted great room with the kitchen at the rear and a glass door to the covered back porch. The primary suite rests on the left; the other bedrooms share a hall on the right.

Living in The Tallgrass
Who it suits
The Tallgrass suits a household that wants its living space and bedrooms on one floor. The porch turns from the front along the whole left wall, and the garage joins the right end behind the house front.
Room by room
- Front entry: a 3 ft door opens straight into the 18 ft 6 in by 35 ft great room, with a kitchen run and island at the rear.
- Primary side: the front-left bedroom measures 14 ft 6 in by 17 ft and has front and left windows; its walk-in closet is 5 ft 6 in wide and 17 ft 6 in long.
- Right hall: a 3 ft cased opening leads to Bedrooms 2 and 3, at 10 x 13 ft and 10 ft 6 in by 13 ft, and to Bath 2, which has no window.
- Garage route: the hall leads through the mudroom and laundry to the garage; the walk-in pantry opens off the great room near the kitchen.
Build notes
- The 56 x 36 ft house has a 6:12 gable roof, with 11 ft eaves and a 20 ft ridge running left to right.
- The 24 x 28 ft garage sits 8 ft behind the house front, under a separate lower 6:12 gable roof.
- The wraparound is 10 ft deep across the 56 ft front and the 36 ft left side; a separate 16 x 10 ft covered porch sits at the back.
- The drawings use conventional wood framing; your builder or engineer adapts a steel or post-frame version and an engineer determines structural sizes, footings and connections.
The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

- Covered back porch: 16' x 10', 3:12 shed roof attached at 11 ft, beam 8 ft 6 in high at the posts, 3 posts
- Structure
- Drawn for conventional wood (stick) framing; trusses, posts, beams and footings are sized by the builder's engineer. A steel-frame or post-frame version is an adaptation your builder or engineer makes. Member sizes, connections and loads are by your builder's engineer for your site.
- Foundation
- Typical starting point: monolithic slab-on-grade with a thickened edge (a stem wall where frost depth requires), footings below the local frost line, a footing under every interior bearing line and girder point, and porch-post footings with uplift ties. Slab thickness, footing sizes, reinforcing and anchorage are sized by your engineer for your soil, frost depth and loads; shop and garage slabs are usually heavier than living-area slabs.
- Counts
- 11 windows, 3 exterior doors, 2 overhead doors, 17 porch posts

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
