About The Loon Lake Retreat

The Loon Lake Retreat turns its tall glass gable to the water, so the lake is the first thing you see every morning. Deep forest-green siding and natural cedar sit quietly in the pines, and a cedar porch steps down toward the dock. Inside it's pale oak, wool and a black wood stove, with a reading loft tucked above the living room.

Living in The Loon Lake Retreat

Who it suits

The Loon Lake Retreat suits lake lots and vacation cabins. The right end of the house is a wall of glass, so the lake has to lie on that side of the lot. The front door opens into a gear room with laundry before you reach the living space.

Room by room

  • Front door: the 3 ft door opens into the gear room and laundry, which has doors to the great room and to the hall.
  • Great room: the kitchen, dining and living areas share a room with 4 fixed windows and a 5 ft glass door, 16 ft tall, across the right end.
  • Reading loft: 12 ft by 9 ft 4 in on the upper level, above the living space.
  • Bedrooms: the hall leads to Bedroom 2, the primary bedroom and Bath 2. The primary has its own bath and windows on the left and rear walls.
  • Outside: the lake porch is 30 ft long and 10 ft deep, and the rear deck is 16 x 8 ft with no roof.

Build notes

  • The 7:12 main roof is 11 ft to the eave and 19 ft 9 in to the ridge. It carries on over the lake porch, which stands on 4 posts.
  • Glass fills the right gable from 16 ft up to the peak, 7 ft 1-1/2 in wide. Your engineer sizes the framing around the glass and the loft.
  • The 8 in stove flue leaves the front roof slope 12 ft 9 in from the ridge.

The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
