About The Whitfield
The Whitfield is the modern farmhouse done right: bright white board-and-batten, a steep black metal roof and black windows, with the two-car garage set back in its own wing beside the house. A screened back porch, a farmhouse kitchen with a butcher-block island, and a vaulted shiplap great room make it as livable as it is good-looking.

Living in The Whitfield
Who it suits
The Whitfield suits anyone drawn to modern-farmhouse curb appeal who wants the garage kept out of the way. The garage wing sits at the right end with its front wall set back 10 ft, and it opens into the mudroom. A flex room at the back is yours to assign.
Room by room
- Front door: the 3 ft entry door opens into a great room that runs the full depth of the house.
- Pantry and powder room: both open off the great room.
- Left side: Bedroom 2, Bath 2 and the primary suite, which has windows on the left and rear walls.
- Right side: Bedroom 3 and the flex room, each with a window on the right wall, plus the mudroom and laundry that leads to the garage.
- Back door: a 3 ft door at the rear of the great room leads to the screened porch, 42 ft long and 10 ft deep.
Build notes
- A steep 8:12 roof, 11 ft to the eave and 25 ft to the ridge, runs front to back, so the gable ends face the street and the back yard.
- The garage wing has its own 8:12 roof, 10 ft to the eave and 18 ft to the ridge, and 2 overhead doors, each 9 x 7 ft, on the front.
- Where the garage meets the house, your builder confirms the fire separation your code requires.
- Both porches have 3:12 shed roofs on 6 posts each. The chimney leaves the left roof slope 7 ft from the ridge.
The exterior and interior images are concept renderings of this design, not photographs of a built home. Finishes and fixtures are illustrative; the plan governs. The floor plan is drawn from the plan set. Areas are approximate and measured to the outside face of exterior walls; porches, garages and shops are listed separately.

- Structure
- Drawn for conventional wood (stick) framing; trusses, posts, beams and footings are sized by the builder's engineer. A steel-frame or post-frame version is an adaptation your builder or engineer makes. Member sizes, connections and loads are by your builder's engineer for your site.
- Foundation
- Typical starting point: monolithic slab-on-grade with a thickened edge (a stem wall where frost depth requires), footings below the local frost line, a footing under every interior bearing line and girder point, and porch-post footings with uplift ties. Slab thickness, footing sizes, reinforcing and anchorage are sized by your engineer for your soil, frost depth and loads; shop and garage slabs are usually heavier than living-area slabs.
- Counts
- 15 windows, 2 exterior doors, 2 overhead doors, 12 porch posts

Sizes are clear inside dimensions for rooms and rough openings for doors and windows, from the plan set. Roof heights are above the finished floor. The structure and foundation lines are typical starting points: the drawings are not stamped, and your builder's engineer sizes members, footings and anchorage for your site, soil, snow, wind and frost depth.
